Little Compton

Little Compton is a small town in Newport County, Rhode Island with a little over 3,500 residents. The town is located between the Sakonnet River and the Massachusetts border and is the birthplace of the Rhode Island Red hen.

Incorporated in 1682, Little Compton is rich with history which can be seen in the town's preserved historic buildings. The Wilbor House, built in 1692, is now home to the Little Compton Historical Society. Many 18th and 19th century structures can also be seen around the Little Compton Commons.

Sakonnet Vineyards, founded in 1975, is located on historic soil and has over 150 acres of land. The Vineyard hosts a variety of events such as concerts, festivals and local gatherings. Visitors can visit daily and participate in tours, tastings and eat at the cafe.

Little Compton is also known for its beautiful beaches such as South Shore Beach and the Goosewing Beach Preserve. Goosewing Beach Preserve is a coastal pond, beach, and dune environment. The Nature Conservancy purchased the 75­acre landmark in 1989 and has since developed the Benjamin Family Environmental Center-open since 2010. Open to the public, visitors can explore the walking trails and the scenery of the nearby beaches.

Because of its historical roots, there are homes for sale in Little Compton dating back to the early 19th century. Real estate prices range from affordable ranches to elaborate waterfront estates. Capes and Colonials are popular in Little Compton, as well as single­family houses. Multi­family homes, cottages, bungalows and farmhouses are also available in town.
